Portland MAX

A collaboration between Andre Caradec of S/U/M and Thom Faulders of Faulders studio along with the Tri-County Metropolitan Transportation District of Oregon (TRI-MET).

The project is an infrastructure scale art installation along the MAX line as it nears Milwaukie, Oregon (a suburb of Portland) on the underside of a new 1,700 ft corten steel bridge overpass.

The installation will be sited on the underside of the bridge, an area so often neglected and underutilized… often dark and uninspiring.

The project aims to ‘illuminate’ this area with a dizzying array of 4″ spherical reflective pixels called “botts” : as one looks up, rather than seeing dark shadow, these brightly colored “botts” will line the underside in patterns that find logic in flocks of birds and schools of fish, rather than the organized movement of traffic.  A pedestrian trail which weaves underneath will direct the pattern, as will the many street crossings below.
